Install Air on Linux

Flatpak Any distribution

Air ships Flatpaks for x86_64 and aarch64. They work on any Linux distribution with Flatpak installed.

flatpak install https://packages.air.ms/flatpak/ms.air.Air.flatpakref

This adds the Air repository and installs the app. If the Freedesktop runtime Air needs isn’t installed yet, Flatpak fetches it from Flathub. You can also open the link in your browser to install Air through GNOME Software or KDE Discover.

Start Air from your app menu, or with flatpak run ms.air.Air. You’ll get updates through flatpak update or your software center.

Debian and Ubuntu .deb

Air ships packages for amd64 and arm64. You need Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, or Debian 13 or newer.

  1. Add the signing key

    sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/keyrings
    curl -fsSL https://packages.air.ms/deb/gpg-key.asc \
      | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/air-keyring.gpg
  2. Add the repository

    echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/air-keyring.gpg] https://packages.air.ms/deb stable main" \
      | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/air.list
  3. Install

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install air

You’ll get updates through sudo apt upgrade.

Fedora .rpm

Air ships packages for x86_64 and aarch64.

sudo dnf config-manager addrepo --from-repofile=https://packages.air.ms/rpm/air.repo
sudo dnf install air

The first time you install, dnf asks you to accept the Air signing key.

Release channels

Channel DEB suite RPM repo file Flatpak
Stable Recommended for most people stable air.repo ms.air.Air.flatpakref
Beta Release candidates, ahead of stable beta air-beta.repo ms.air.Air-beta.flatpakref

To pick a channel:

  • DEB: replace stable in step 2 with beta.
  • RPM: use air-beta.repo instead of air.repo.
  • Flatpak: use the channel’s file in the install command, e.g. ms.air.Air-beta.flatpakref.

Use only one channel at a time. Air can’t be downgraded, so be careful when you switch to a slower channel (from beta to stable):

  • DEB and RPM: all channels install the same app, so switching replaces your current installation. You keep your current version until the new channel releases a newer one. Updates then continue from the new channel.
  • Flatpak: uninstall the current channel first, e.g. flatpak uninstall ms.air.Air//beta, then install the new one. All channels share the same app data.

Build from source

Air can also be built from source code. This is only recommended for people who don’t have access to binaries or packages.
